In a recent global survey conducted by Anglia Ruskin University, South Africa emerged as one of the world’s most body confident countries.
Previous research has established the link between positive body image and various well-being traits such as improved self-esteem and healthier eating habits. However, this comprehensive study explored body appreciation variances across countries.
With 56 968 participants from 65 nations, the study found that South Africa ranked 10th among the most body confident nations globally. Malta secured the top spot, followed by Taiwan, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan.
Interestingly, the research also highlighted that body appreciation tends to be higher among individuals living in rural areas, possibly due to less pressure to conform to Western body ideals.
The study’s lead author, Professor Viren Swami, emphasised the importance of promoting positive body image worldwide for enhanced psychological wellbeing.
South Africa’s placement in the top 10 serves as a testament to the nation’s healthy body image culture.
