Grey hair – a phenomenon that often occurs when one’s hair changes its colour from its primary colour, either black, blonde, brunet or red to a silver/white-ish colour.
Many associate its presence with old age or the development of wisdom through built up experience over a certain life span.
Meanwhile, while the above mentioned is often seen as the norm, many have said that people also develop grey hair as a result of continuous stress.
Psych Central – a website focusing on the psychological factors of the human brain- states that research proves that chronic stress can decrease stem cells that produce pigment of colour in your hair. This can lead to grey hair.
“Hair colour is determined by melanocytes which produce the pigment melanin.
“As you age, melanocyte stem cells gradually disappear. When your hair regrows from follicles that have lost these cells, it has less pigment or color.
According to researchers, “stress causes the stress hormone norepinephrine to release into hair follicles. This causes noticeable loss of melanocyte stem cells in mice. Without these stem cells, new hair turns gray or white,” writes the publication.
Here’s how you can manage your stress:
Take breaks from negativity
Social media is considered one of the biggest causes of stress. It creates an unrealistic highlight of people’s lives that are not always accurate. This causes one to compare their life to that of others. The same can be said about watching TV and reading magazines. This is why it’s important to limit your time when it comes to these.
Take care of yourself
There is no care like self-care, go out! Jog and get enough exercise.
Find a confidant
Speaking about what is bothering you is an ideal way of letting go. Find a friend that you can share your deepest concerns with, this is guaranteed to make you feel much better.
