A couple of years ago, I heard about a social movement where lovers of good music, food, and company met for good times at a monthly social event called THE WKND SOCIAL. I was keen to be part of the festivities which were co-founded by Nandi Dlepu who would in later years create another social event called Feel Good Series, which is a monthly rooftop party. After attending a couple of these turn up sessions held once a month in Johannesburg’s inner city, I was very excited when I heard that a bigger version of this event was going to take place.
As a woman in her 30s, I have a hard time finding a vibe that understands my need to have fun in a creative, relaxed and interactive atmosphere. It needs to be in a setting where I can dance to Afro beats and hip-hop music on a spacious dance floor. I’m so glad that I attended this festival because it was just the perfect way to spend my Saturday.

Fun galore
I loved that the festival started at 3pm, just in time to soak in the afternoon sun with sundowners. I spent the afternoon walking around the venue that has an urban farm feel with loads of design studios, art galleries and artisan shops. I loved the greenery of the farm against the restored industrial building where the dancing was taking place. The decor in the rustic building had an artistic flair with plenty of seating areas, all with a modern and funky edge.

There was something interesting and unique to look at in every corner, and the oversized colourful beach chairs stood out. I was disappointed that even though there were plenty of alcohol offerings, I couldn’t seem to find the food stalls. Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach is never a good idea, and I was not happy doing so.
The live performances by Darkie Fiction, Yanga Yaya, and DJs such as DJ DooWoop and Muzi kept everyone dancing from the very first beat. The crowd was polite, friendly and accommodating and I loved that because there is nothing worse than partying with an unruly crowd. I found myself complimenting so many people on their outfits because they all looked stunning in their unique and stylish clothes. It felt more like a fashion show!

Yay or nay?
I had to leave around 8pm because I was just too hungry. Also, the area surrounding the venue did not seem safe to me at night. But, I left happy and eager to attend the next festival.
