Celebs such as DJ Zinhle, Lerato Kganyago and Bonang Matheba have made wigs their everyday accessory. Most women prefer to have more than one wig, not only for a change of style but to allow enough time for the cleaning and treating of the hair. Wigs are an investment, and to make sure that they look new and last longer, you need to know how to care for them properly. By Grace Mantjiu

Here are a few ways to maintain the quality of your wig:
1. Detangling – It’s important to not use a brush when detangling the hair. Brushes are harsh and can cause the hair to shed. Gently use a wide-tooth comb to undo the knots or your fingers for longer lengths. This prevents further tangling in the washing stage.

2. Avoid regular exposure to heat – The same way you protect your hair from heat applies to wigs, too. Avoid blow drying or using heat to style it. After washing your wig, leave it to air-dry.
3. Use proper products – Regular shampoo can be used on virgin remy hair, but can be damaging to synthetic wigs. So, rather choose sulfate-free shampoos as they are gentler. With a sulfate-free shampoo, you won’t experience the bubbles or foam you may be accustomed to, but that doesn’t mean they won’t clean well. Wash your wig after 10 uses. Use lukewarm water mixed with a bit of shampoo in a spray bottle to prep it before washing. Follow up with conditioner then rinse. Do not rub or brush while wet.
