South African artist, Mthandazo Gatya, did more than merely just participate in the #OpenVerseChallenge set by world-renowned singer John Legend – he caught the attention, and the approval, of the multi award-winning artist.
The award-winning musician released his eighth studio album — which is a double album — titled Legend. With Nervous being one of the tracks on the album, John Legend used TikTok as a marketing tool, whilst giving his fans a chance to show off their talent.
Mthandazo, who had South Africans singing and dancing to his hit song Senzeni in 2021, did not miss the opportunity to show off his creative prowess when John Legend invited fans to “duet” his video on TikTok.
He gave the song an African touch, with a verse in IsiZulu and had a maskandi feel to it and displayed an outstanding spectacle of vocal ability, and the video has already been viewed over 1 million times on TikTok.
The verse explains how his knees still buckle when he sees his muse, a perfect combination of two musicians worlds apart, with one common heart string.
Thousands commented to ask Legend to close the challenge since a clear winner for the challenge was presumed to be Gatya.
He thanked his supporters and said that Legend noticed his post and he also shared that he is hoping more comes out of the All of Me hitmaker’s reply.
‘Thank you all for make sure John Legend sees my duet, great news is that he loved it and replied, as to what will happen next, we can leave that to God, thank you from the bottom of my heart,’ Mthandazo said.
