Upgrade your skin care routine by avoiding these skin care mistakes.
Summer is coming up which calls for healthy glowing looking skin. You can achieve this by ensuring you are looking after your skin effectively.
Practising good skin hygiene.
Our faces are exposed to so many things on a day-to-day basis. And although we cannot avoid every single thing that is bad for us, we can ensure that we are doing enough to prevent bad skin hygiene.
We touch our phones and then our faces countless times during the day without thinking twice about it. Make sure that you are regularly wiping off your entire phone to limit the dirt exposed to yourself.
Make a habit of changing your bedding as this is essential for your skin and overall hygiene. Chartered psychologist, neuroscientist and sleep expert, Dr Lindsay Browning told the BBC that we should be changing our bed sheets once a week or every two weeks at the most. She goes on to explain that this is important due to sweat and dead skin cells that can build up in your sheets.
Since our faces are touching our pillowcases every night, make sure that you are changing your pillowcases regularly. According to Healthline, silk pillowcases are gentler on the skin compared to rough cotton pillowcases. This is a great option for people who struggle with acne or sensitivity.
Not using effective skin care methods
Another mistake people are often making is not using effective skin care methods to reap all the benefits. Cleansing effectively is essential as this wipes away the dirt from the entire day. Due to muscle memory, we often slather our cleansers onto our faces and then wipe them away too quickly. Consider using the sixty second rule from esthetician Nayamka Roberts-Smith of LABeautylologist.
She explains that taking sixty seconds to wash your face makes you pay attention to your skin and what you are doing so that you are effectively washing your entire face. This ensures that the ingredients in our cleansers have enough time to work their magic.
Another tip would be to double cleanse at the end of the day. Double cleansing helps to cleanse your face properly, especially when you are wearing makeup and and sunscreen during the day. Using an oil based cleanser first to remove your makeup and then going in with a gentle hydrating cleanser for your evening skin care routine is a great option.
Being too harsh on your skin
Some people think that by using a complicated skin care routine with many steps is the right thing to do. Sometimes keeping it simple is more helpful for your skin as you do not want to risk clogging up your pores. You could consider pairing back with a more natural makeup look every now and then. This gives your skin a break from heavy makeup and too many products.
Consider giving your skin some time to breathe from all the skin care products and makeup that we use every day. According to board-certified dermatologist Dr Purvisha Patel, it is important to let your skin breathe, or go without products for at least a few hours a day. “A good time would be when working out. Going product-free lets the sweat come out of the pores.”
Sometimes we do not realise just how harsh we are on our skin. Using cotton pads with micellar water or make-up wipes to remove our makeup can be harsh for our skin. Alternatively try using micellar water with your hands as this is a gentler way to remove your makeup. Instead of using make-up wipes, try using a cleansing balm or oil cleanser with your hands, as this is an effective method for removing makeup.
Knowing the correct products to use on your face is also essential. There is no point in using all the trending products we see on social media when they are not suitable for our specific skin type and skin concern. This can be very harsh on your skin. Educate yourself on your skin type and skin concern and know what ingredients you should be looking for.
