Whether you’re rocking a beard or prefer a clean shave, your summer grooming routine should look a little bit different from your winter one. That’s because summer poses some unique – but easily solved – facial grooming challenges.
The warmer temperatures affect our skin and hair in several ways. We sweat more, which means we’re exposed to more bacteria. The increase in humidity can make our hair frizzier and less manageable. Increased exposure to the sun can lead to dry skin and even drier hair… But the good news is that with the right products and a slightly adapted routine, you can easily overcome these challenges and enjoy a healthy beard and complexion all summer long.
Here’s how.
Cleanse regularly
One of the most important steps in your summer routine is to cleanse your skin and beard thoroughly twice a day. Our skin gets sweaty in the heat, and sweat can get trapped in your beard, resulting in skin breakouts and bad odour. Gently massage your facial cleanser all over your skin and beard, and rinse thoroughly before applying a moisturising product. We recommend Clubman 2-In-1 Beard Conditioner (R219.95). A facial moisturiser and beard conditioner in one, this product is formulated with a special blend of coconut oil, soy protein, and panthenol to condition and soften the beard, while soothing and nourishing the skin underneath.
Moisturise your facial hair
The warm weather and constant sun exposure can lead to dry facial hair, so it’s important to restore moisture by applying a nourishing balm every day. We recommend Clubman Beard Balm (R219.95) to help shape the beard without a stiff paste or heavy wax and it is suitable for all hair types and lengths. If you are using a beard oil as well (Clubman Beard & Tattoo Oil, R219.95, is great, by the way!), use the oil at night and the beard balm in the morning.
Shave with an oil
Whether you’re removing all your facial hair, or just shaping your beard and moustache, we recommend using a shave oil this summer. An oil formula allows for more precise shaving as you can see better, and it provides the skin with a protective barrier to help avoid nicks and cuts. Clubman Shave Oil (R174.95) conditions and moisturises hair and skin and allows you to get a close, smooth shave.
Apply an after-shave product
If you’re going for a clean-shaven look this summer, you’ll probably shave regularly. To avoid irritation, redness, itching and dry skin, be sure to apply a good quality after-shave product to your skin after every shave. Clubman Pinaud After Shave Lotion (R219.95) is cooling, soothing and has a great masculine fragrance.
Bumps, be gone!
No matter how carefully you shave, razor bumps can happen to anyone. Razor bumps take shape in the form of clusters of small, red, or dark bumps around hair follicles. The surrounding skin can also be red or inflamed. If you’re prone to razor bumps, you are likely to be prone to developing ingrown hairs too, which are not only painful but can lead to long-term scarring. If your skin is sensitive after shaving, or if you are prone to razor bumps or burns, we recommend applying Clubman Bump Repair Gel (R219.95) after every shave. It helps unclogs pores, heals irritated skin, prevents scarring, eases razor burn, shave bumps and ingrown hairs, while leaving your neck and face looking great. It contains salicylic acid and panthenol to prevent ingrown hairs and dissolve impurities in the pores.
Don’t forget to treat your skin
Our skin is oilier during summer, and if not removed properly, the excess oil can clog pores, leading to breakouts and blackheads. Dissolve surface oils and keep your skin’s oil production under control with a weekly mask. Clubman Peel-Off Black Mask (R189.95) has a rich, honey-like texture that draws out toxins, debris and impurities from the skin while enhancing clarity. It leaves skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.
