The 21st of December is a national Coquito day, a holiday drink popular around Christmas time and enjoyed by Family and friends .
According to the National calendar, Coquito is a drink used to celebrate the holidays in Puerto Rico and is normally shared by loved ones after a dinner meal to share the spirit of the festive season.
Every country has its own spin on this holiday drink, each adding their own twist for their traditional taste, be it alcohol or spices they use.
There are easy ways of making this drink, you can add your favorite rum, vanilla, cinnamon and cloves.
National calendar suggests you start early in making the drink to allow it to chill in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days before serving for a better taste. A traditional way of making this drink is with:
- Rum.
- Coconut milk.
- Spices.
You share this drink using a cordial or short glass with family and friends, after a series of toasts celebrating the holidays, life, family & friends.
Coquito means “little coconut” in Spanish, the National Coquito day was launched in 2018 by Destileria Serralles, A company that makes the popular rum called Don Q in Puerto Rico. According to Newsweekly the first ever Coquito drink was believed to be made in the 1900s and was recorded in the Puerto Rican cookbooks, Cocine a Gusto and The Puerto Rican Cookbook, between the 1950s and 1970.
