Working on yourself sometimes simply means “being a better human being for yourself and others”, a person who is aware of their surroundings and themselves.

According to LifeHack, becoming your best self means taking control of your life and the more empowered you are in your life, the more you would reflect positively on the decisions you make.

One thing many people seem to confuse is thinking being a better human being requires being perfect. Some of us strive to do better with whatever capacity we have and fulfill ourselves mentally by not doing unto others what you don’t wish to be done to you.

In accordance to judging yourself harshly Inc Africa says, “we’ve all made mistakes throughout our lives that haven’t exactly put us in the best light–like bullying someone in school, work or telling what seemed like a little white lie. Chances are, however, you probably felt a little guilt and grew because of the situation”.

Some of the basic ideas you can apply to make yourself a better version of a human being are:

  • Complimenting yourself in everything you do for example, on a new hairstyle, outfit, how you respond to others and giving yourself an emotional boost once in a while. Inc Africa says, when you’re happy with yourself it can be contagious to those around you.

  • Most times we like to point fingers when things don’t work out, either at your workplace or at home or with relationships. It is advised that you stop making excuses and own up to some mistakes and learn from them.

  • Some of us think holding on to resentment gives you power over the things that hurt you, however, Psychotherapist Joyce Marter, shared with Africa Inc  “If for no other reason than for yourself, forgive yourself from the negative experiences of the past. Take time to meditate, and give thanks for the wisdom and knowledge gained from your suffering. Practice the mantra, ‘I forgive you and I release you.’

  • Be aware of your surroundings and keep up with the news so you can better engage in topics. For example, if you don’t know why a country invades another, take time to educate yourself and research on the subject before you comment. Being up to date with current events makes you well-rounded and able to engage without offending anyone.
