A teenager recently caused an uproar on social media after she revealed that she is resentful towards her parents because they have turned her childhood into social media content.
We live in a world where everything is content, especially for millennials and Generation Z who are slowly taking over the workplaces and therefore becoming parents. This also means that their babies are bound to be faced with more or less the same issues as they view everything as content.
In an article published by Teen Vogue, a teenage girl Claire (not her real name), is increasingly resentful towards her parents because they have turned her childhood into social media content.
Generation Z babies did not play like the 90s babies as many of them are exposed to social media from a young age, for most being on social media themselves wasn’t by choice. It was because their parents always had a camera in their faces, just like Claire, whose whole childhood life was turned into YouTube content.
According to the Teen Vogue Claire told the publication that she started going viral when she was only a toddler, and when her parents noticed how her YouTube channel was increasing each and every single day, they quit their jobs and decided to film their daughter for content for the whole world to see.
Claire’s family made so much money from it that they bought a nice house and a car. Although it afforded them a good lifestyle Claire was not too happy about it all as years went by, she realised that she hated what they were doing and asked her dad if they could stop. However, her father was not so thrilled by his daughter’s request and said to his daughter that they will no longer have “nice things,” if there were to stop filming her.
“That’s not fair that I have to support everyone,” she said. “I try not to be resentful but I kind of [am],” Claire told the publication.
Claire expressed her frustration to the publication that it was unfair to be exploited by her parents, who wanted a soft life at her expense. As long as they could shove a camera to her face and afford all the nice things, then all was well with them.
She concluded by telling the publication that once she turned 18, she will move out and cut off ties with her parents and also expose her parents for publicising her childhood.
