We often reach for food when we experience negative emotions, such as depression. The food options chosen are sometimes unhealthy. However, there are food options that will help to fight our depression.
According to UNICEF, depression is one of the most common types of mental health conditions, often developing alongside anxiety. It can either be mild and short-lived or severe and long-lasting.
Depression can also be preventable when the appropriate support is provided.
While getting the much-needed support, you can also try these foods, provided by WebMD, to help you with your depression.
- Carrots: A carrot a day may keep depression at bay. Studies have shown that the nutrient beta-carotene (found in pumpkins and sweet potatoes too) is linked to lowering levels of depression.
- Milk: This liquid food is packed with vitamin D. If you do not have enough of this nutrient in your body, you may become depressed. If you are not a fan of milk, consume some vitamin D-filled cereals, juices or canned fish.
- Salmon: Just like herring and tuna, this fish is packed with polyunsaturated fats. Researchers think that this type of fat can help to fight depression. Omega-3 fatty acids – a type of polyunsaturated fat – may also help brain cells use chemicals that can affect your mood.
- Leafy greens: Folate, which is found in leafy greens, is something the brain needs to work well. It may also help protect you against depression.
WebMD notes that you should avoid alcohol and junk food when feeling depressed.
You can drink alcohol in moderation, however, choosing to drink heavily can make your depression symptoms worse over time, as alcohol makes the brain less active and antidepressants less effective.
Regarding junk food, WebMD states that processed foods can be bad for your mood. According to studies, diets high in sugar, fatty foods and simple carbohydrates affect how you may feel.
