Nail extensions are a fantastic way to achieve beautiful, long, and durable nails. However, there comes a time when you need to remove them, either due to maintenance or a desire for a change.
While visiting a salon for nail extension removal is a more viable option, removing them at home with a few simple steps and precautions is possible.
Here are some tips to help you through the process of safely removing nail extensions in the comfort of your own home:
1. Gather the necessary tools
Before you begin the removal process, gather all the tools you’ll need. These may include a nail file, a nail buffer, acetone-based nail polish remover, aluminium foil, cotton balls or pads, a cuticle pusher, and a nourishing cuticle oil or cream. Having these items at hand will help make the process more efficient.
2. Trim and file your nails
Using a nail clipper, trim your nails down to a manageable length. This step is essential to prevent excessive pressure on your natural nails during the removal process. Next, gently file the surface of your nail extensions to remove the top layer, making it easier for the acetone to penetrate and dissolve the adhesive.
3. Prepare an acetone soak
Pour enough acetone-based nail polish remover into a glass bowl to cover your nails completely. Place cotton balls or pads soaked in nail polish remover on top of your nails. Wrap small pieces of aluminum foil around each fingertip to secure the cotton. This soak will help break down the adhesive bond.
4. Wait for the soak
Allow your nails to soak for about 15–20 minutes, giving the acetone enough time to loosen the nail extensions. You can use this opportunity to relax and pamper yourself with a face mask or a good book.
5. Gently remove the extensions
After the soak, one by one, remove the aluminium foil wraps from your fingertips and gently push the softened nail extensions with a cuticle pusher. Avoid excessive force or scraping, as this can damage your natural nails. If the extensions don’t come off easily, re-soak them for a few more minutes and try again.
6. Clean and hydrate your nails
Once the extensions are removed, use a nail buffer to gently buff away any remaining residue or unevenness. This step will smooth the surface of your natural nails. Follow up by washing your hands with mild soap and warm water to remove any lingering acetone residue. Finally, apply a nourishing cuticle oil or cream to hydrate and condition your nails and cuticles.
