The Twitter streets were abuzz after Bonang Matheba’s short-lived appearance on the second season of Young, Famous & African.
The Netflix reality series sees the friendships, fallouts and flirtation between a group of successful and influential African celebrities.
The second season introduced American-Ghanaian dancehall singer Fantana, Namibian entrepreneur and former Big Brother Africa contestant Luis Munana, and South Africa’s very own Bonang Matheba.
Bonang seemed to ruffle some feathers while also getting her own feathers ruffled.
Once Bonang made her first appearance on the show at Diamond Platnumz’s dinner party, Nadia Nakai and Khanyi Mbau stepped out of the room, leaving Naked DJ and others confused.
In another episode, Bonang and Luis got into it after Luis confessed and apologised about booking an accommodation for Bonang but not confirming the booking after an event which occurred in Namibia, leaving the TV personality to fly back to South Africa. The two newcomers also got into a heated argument after Luis commented on Fantana’s fling with Diamond Platnumz.
Later in the show, Nigerian stylist Swanky Jerry announced that Bonang “decided to exit the WhatsApp group” as she felt as if everyone was “ganging up against her.”
Khanyi said to Swanky about the matter, “This is a different space. When you walk into this family, we’re all kings and queens.”
She further said in her confessionals, “I think Bonang has walked into a room where everyone here has achieved the most, but she’s never had friends that are on the same level as her. She’s always got people that are below her, that adore her, so it is gonna be difficult to get to a space like this, because here we don’t care who you are.”
Tweeps also shared their thoughts on Bonang’s exit of the show.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela wrote, “Bonang did not quit or exit #YoungFamousAfrican because of anyone on the cast. She did not sign on to be a cast member but just a featured cameo. She was never gonna be on the show for the full season.”

Content creator Sean Garrette wrote, “I think Bonang thought she was gonna come on the show and be the STAR. Her quitting is kind of lame, because she started her own drama.”

“Why did Bonang leave vele?? At this point I think Khanyi was right! She didn’t get the spotlight & attention she expected,” said another.
