Musician and reality TV star Phelo Bala was allegedly fired from Gqeberha: The Empire before he could even appear on the Mzansi Magic telenovela.
His brother and TKZee member Zwai informed him on The Bala Family reality show that he had learned through rumours that he had been dismissed prior to the episode’s airing.
The news was disclosed in the presence of the whole Bala family. The family was discussing how to assist Phelo in overcoming his drinking problems and disruptive behaviour while seated at the dinner table.
“I didn’t arrive at work on the day. I had a very hectic weekend and, on the Monday, I was supposed to be at work,” said Phelo on the show.
Pinky, who is the eldest of the Bala siblings, told Sunday World that they had hoped that Phelo’s Gqeberha: The Empire role would help him improve and mature, however, he failed to show up and they were disappointed with his behaviour.
“There is nothing we haven’t done for Phelo to better himself. This makes me see him as a crybaby sometimes and he needs to grow and realise that time is running faster than he is actually trying to improve himself.
“We cannot force him to do anything that he does not want, he is our brother and we want to see him happy but we also understand that some of the things that make him happy will fade faster, we hoped he would get this Gqeberha job. We know it would have helped him and his career a lot,” she said.
The publication also spoke to Tshedza Pictures production manager, Qhayiya Dana, who said: “We can confirm that Phelo Bala auditioned for a role in the telenovela. He is more than welcome to audition again if another role opens up.”
