How to prevent avocados from browning

Avocados are a versatile and nutritious fruit that can enhance the flavour of countless dishes. However, one of the downsides of using avocados is their tendency to quickly turn brown when exposed to air. This unappealing browning can make them less visually appealing and potentially affect their taste. Thankfully, there are several simple yet effective methods to prevent avocados from browning and keep them fresh for longer. Here’s how:
Lemon or Lime Juice: Acidic juices like lemon or lime can help slow down the browning process, according to Healthline. Squeeze a small amount of fresh juice over the exposed flesh of the avocado. The citric acid acts as a natural antioxidant, inhibiting the enzyme responsible for browning.
Plastic Wrap: Place a sheet of plastic wrap directly over the cut surface of the avocado, ensuring there are no air pockets. This creates a barrier, minimising the avocado’s exposure to air and reducing the likelihood of browning.
Onion Technique: Cut an onion in half and place one half in an airtight container. Put the cut avocado on top of the onion, making sure the flesh is in contact with the onion. The sulfur compounds in the onion can help prevent browning.
Olive Oil: Lightly brush or drizzle olive oil over the exposed flesh of the avocado. The oil creates a protective layer that prevents air from reaching the surface, thus reducing oxidation and browning, according to Martha Stewart.
By utilising these simple techniques, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your avocados and keep them fresh and appetising for longer. Whether you’re preparing guacamole, avocado toast, or a salad, you can now confidently enjoy your avocados without worrying about their unsightly browning.
