The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) announced its nominees for the 29th ceremony which will be held at Durban’s International Convention Centre on 17 and 18 November 2023.
The announcement of the nominees took place on Tuesday, October 3rd, at Jabulani Theatre in Soweto.
Hip Hop dominated this year with the rappers Ntokozo “K.O” Mdluli and late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes bagging 13 nominations between the two of them. AKA received a total of seven nominations with K.O going under just by one, securing a total of six nominations.
The rappers are both nominated for Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Collaboration (with AKA nominate for two songs), Best Produced Video, and Best Hip-Hop Album. K.O also got the Remix of the Year nomination while AKA received the Best Engineered Album nomination.
Speaking at the nominees’ event ceremony on the city’s appreciation for being selected as hosts of the giant music awards for three years, KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs MEC, Siboniso Duma shared:
“We are humbled by the fact that we will host SAMA Awards over the next three years. We flatter ourselves to believe that this is because KZN and the eThekwini Municipality in particular, have in the past proved to be worthy and competent hosts of a number of national, continental and international events of diverse interests.
“We are overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response and interest that has been shown by all creative industry. We have no doubt that the entire tourism industry and other sectors of our economy will be stimulated. We are looking forward to hosting thousands of music lovers and tourists who will visit our province ahead of SAMA Awards and during the event itself.”
