With new research and innovation taking place, a qualification can become irrelevant over time, therefore it is very important for employees and jobseekers to look for opportunities to develop and upskill themselves.
Boniwe Dunster, HR specialist and founder of Blue Eagle Human Capital Practice says: ‘Continuous improvement is a game changer and a distinguisher in the workplace! There is space for most qualifications being offered, however, the challenge lies in getting the relevant experience soon after the qualification. The longer one struggles to get experience, the harder it becomes to apply the knowledge obtained through the qualification.’
When is the right time to obtain an additional qualification?
Both experience and qualifications have a place in the job market, but one needs knowledge to obtain practical experience. ‘Common practice is for one to obtain a qualification soon after high school, however, if one is already in corporate and started working before obtaining a qualification, it would be advisable to obtain a qualification once they have determined their career aspirations and know which career path they want to follow,’ says Boniwe.
Experience VS qualifications… Is one more important than the other?
Boniwe says that a qualification gives one confidence, a good foundation and validation that one has the knowledge and understanding of the profession, however, it is also beneficial for one to obtain experience soon after the qualification as this solidifies the person in the profession. ‘There are professions where one requires skills and experience over qualifications, especially in those that are constantly changing, like in the tech space. A jobseeker with experience is more likely to get a job faster than someone with just a qualification,’ she says.
Upskilling if you have an existing qualification
Getting practical experience as soon as possible is a good start! ‘This can be done through job shadowing with someone who already has the experience. This allows one to get first-hand experience from the expert,’ advises Boniwe. Asking for learning opportunities outside of your immediate team, if you are not working in a team in line with your qualifications, can also help. Most importantly, be curious to learn more by always asking questions.
