This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, prioritise your breast health by booking an appointment for a mammogram. The non-invasive procedure plays a significant role in screening breast cancer before signs and symptoms are caused.
What is a mammogram?
According to Mayo Clinic, a mammogram is an X-ray image of your breasts that is used for either breast cancer screening or for diagnostic purposes. During the scan, your breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces which is used to spread out the breast tissue. An X-ray then captures black-and-white images displayed on a computer screen which is further examined for signs of cancer.
Who should get a mammogram?
Women’s Imaging Specialists states that women between the ages of 40 and 75 should go for the breast scan – once a year from 40 to 55, and every other year from 55 to 75.
How do you prepare for a mammogram?
Below are five steps on how to prepare for a mammogram, according to the publication Women’s Imaging Specialists.
1. Gather the necessary paperwork beforehand
Details to have ready before having your mammogram include the following:
- Personal identification
- Medical aid information
- Mammogram prescription or doctor’s orders
- Past mammogram scans (if applicable)
- Recent surgeries or conditions
2. Schedule an appropriate day
Because a mammogram involves pressing your breasts between scanning plates, try scheduling a day when your breasts are not tender, sore, or swollen. You might have to predict a suitable time to go. If you are not sure, book your appointment a week after your cycle when your breasts are not tender due to ovulation.
3. What you should and should not wear
Wear:
- A two-piece outfit: A jeans and t-shirt, or blouse and skirt, for example, is advisable to wear as you will have to take off the top articles of clothing, including your bra, when going for your mammogram.
- Comfortable shoes: As you will most likely be standing during the scan, it is best to wear comfortable shoes.
Do not wear:
- Deodorant or lotion: Particles in topical cosmetics, such as deodorant or lotion, can interfere with the scan. Rather bring such products along with you and apply once the scan is complete.
- Jewellery: Remove all facial and torso-related jewellery from your body that can possibly interfere with the scan.
4. Eat and drink normally
As the scan is not of your digestive system, there is no need to worry about what to have for breakfast.
5. Have a post-mammogram hot bath
For some, a mammogram will have people feeling sore or uncomfortable. Therefore, the best way to alleviate any pain is by having a hot bath. The hot water simultaneously relaxes the tissue and muscles in your body and helps relieve stress.
