Jägermeister – a popular German liqueur – is known for its intense, unique flavour. However, not much is known about the potential health benefits it possesses.
According to the health publication WebMD, Jägermeister is infused with numerous herbs, and a lot of its recipe is kept secret to keep the brand exclusive. Although, it is known that the drink contains bitter orange, cloves, and star anise, among other ingredients, that support its one-of-a-kind flavour.
The health publication adds that since Jägermeister is a highly refined liquor, it consists mostly of alcohol, water, sugar, and essential oils. “Most of the plant material has been removed, leaving only the volatile compounds that add flavor and scent to the alcohol.”
Enjoyed neat or over ice, here are the potential health benefits of drinking moderate amounts of Jägermeister.
Lowers risks of strokes
WebMD states that early research showed that drinking moderate amounts of Jägermeister may be linked to a lower risk of strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. The moderate amounts appeared to prevent the arteries in the brain from narrowing and putting individuals at higher risk for a stroke.
Can improve digestion
Liquors and Liqueurs, a publication that dives into the health benefits and side effects of enjoying a nightcap, states that Jägermeister has natural diuretic properties. These properties can help stimulate the production of gastric acids and enzymes necessary for complete digestion.
Boosts energy and better sleep quality
The above-mentioned publication also notes that Jägermeister has been scientifically formulated to provide the following health benefits:
- Increased energy levels
- Improved mental clarity
- Enhanced focus
- Heightened alertness
- Improved sleep quality
Helps reduces inflammation
Jägermeister contains cloves and anise seed which include multiple compounds that are linked to anti-inflammatory properties. “Eugenol is the most common of these compounds and gives cloves their distinct flavour,” explains WebMD. “Studies have demonstrated that eugenol can help reduce the inflammatory response in the body, preventing negative effects.”
It is important to note that the alcohol content in Jägermeister can also create health complications for people with certain medical conditions.
