A few days after UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis stated that South Africa has the worst government in the world, singer and actress Simz Ngema also spoke out about the country’s leadership with a special focus on violent crimes.
Although Minister of Police Bheki Cele shared in the quarter two crime statistics 2023/2024 in November last year that there was a 3.1% decline in murders between May and July and a 0.8% drop in the number of people killed between July and September, violent crimes are still rampant in South Africa.
Taking to Instagram, Simz shared a video stating that the topic of violent crimes in South Africa cannot be ignored.
“It is a major contributor to our broken homes, our broken families and a poor performance of our economy as a country. We are scared and the law enforcement is telling us how to avoid being victims of crime instead of using resources to fight crime.”
Simz continued, “South Africa is not a poor country. We have resources to address violent and organised crime, but yet again our government has gone MIA [missing in action]. The government claims that they are fighting crime and corruption, yet we have not seen a plan to tackle it. We want to see the government fight crime instead of making empty promises during elections.”
The media personality then shared that like many South Africans, she too has been affected by crime. “I believe we deserve to feel safe, and we deserve justice, irrespective of our social status. Why is crime not a priority in this country? What are we supposed to do as South African citizens when there is no control over crime? … Imagine not worrying about your house getting broken into, your children getting kidnapped or your phone getting stolen while walking.”
Emphasising that the South African government needs to prioritise crime, Simz concluded by stating that now is the time for the government to hear the citizens’ cries and learn from their mistakes to become a better country.
“We need a proactive government that is willing to do the necessary work to get our country to the right place.”
