While Bafana Bafana’s bonus after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remains confidential, the team’s captain Ronwen Williams is said to have donated a total of R50,000 to his primary school.
Getting more than just a visit from Ronwen, Gelvandale Primary School, situated in Gqeberha, also received the goalkeeper’s iconic red jersey he wore during the tournament when he made history after saving four penalty shots in one game, reports Algoa FM.
“Gelvandale Primary School will always be special to me because this is where everything started for me,” said Ronwen.

During his visit, the above-mentioned radio station shares that one learner asked Ronwen how he felt making those iconic saves, to which Ronwen replied, “I was happy that we could finally get into the semi-finals after 20 years. I, however, can’t take all the credit; the team, coaching staff, and analysts also deserve the credit.”
The school’s principal, Ronald Boggenpoel, who is also Ronwen’s former soccer coach, stated that the Bafana Bafana captain not forgetting his roots was a proud moment for the school.
“The donation will make a huge difference in the lives of the up-and-coming sports stars,” noted Ronald.
Regarding the bonuses Bafana Bafana are said to receive, controversy and confusion arose when the South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan told the media that the national soccer team would earn R7 million if they won the tournament, which has a $7 million (R134 million) first prize, reports TimesLIVE. Danny then backtracked, saying it was a matter of a mix-up in currencies.
The team has, however, earned over R46.9 million for achieving third place at AFCON, according to TimesLIVE.
SAFA shared in a statement:
“We wish to confirm that a contract was signed between the Association and the senior players representing the team where the payments and bonuses were agreed upon, depending on the team’s performance in the tournament, details of which remain confidential. This agreement was confirmed before the team departed for AFCON and all the parties were happy.”
