With some children becoming picky eaters as they grow, it may require parents to learn to accommodate their young one’s taste preferences.
According to information hub Parents, some kids fear certain veggies, while others only eat brown food. Getting picky eaters to try new meals is tough no matter what they like.
Marina Chaparro, RD, a paediatric nutrition expert, tells the information hub that it is normal for children to be picky eaters as they decide what they want to eat. She advises parents to offer healthy options and be patient and consistent.
Picky eating is one of the most typical parental complaints. It is unusual for a child to eagerly eat anything, including new vegetables, and exotic cuisine. Instead, many youngsters develop strong dislikes for specific meals.
Vegetables are regular offenders, whereas packaged desserts and chips are not, says the information hub that focuses on child development, Child Mind Institute.
Rachel Busman, PsyD, a clinical psychologist says, “I think all parents have said at one time, ‘My kid is such a picky eater!’ It’s very natural for children to go through moments of being more choosy, especially when they’re attempting to show their independence.”
Child Mind Institute suggests ways in which parents can deal with children who are picky eaters:
- Don’t force your child to eat.
- Try to gently expand the menu.
- Don’t make your child a second meal.
- Deal with undesirable food gently.
- Look into DIY ways for converting picky eaters.
