The well-renowned insurance company Old Mutual has officially landed itself in hot water after a series of public complaints tainted the company’s reputation of being a reputable brand.
This came after an X (formerly Twitter) user took to the social media platform to slam the company for failing to pay out her mother’s pension.
Taking to the platform the user whose name is Sebabatso Molefi reached out to the insurance company demanding answers.
“Dear @OldMutualSA please advise why you are refusing to release my mother’s money even though a court order has been provided. You are in contempt of court, and I am about to lose my cool right now.”

According to news and entertainment publication The South African, Sebabatso claims that her mother invested around R3 million into the insurance company.
Old Mutual has, however, responded to the Sebabatso this past weekend revealing that due to the sensitivity of the matter, they cannot engage in discussing the matter on a public platform without breaching a certain level of confidentiality.
“We are in contact with both parties to resolve the matter. Old Mutual is committed to delivering on our obligations to our clients while ensuring that we operate within the regulations of our industry and law.”

Meanwhile, Sebabatso’s tweet has resulted in several others sharing their experiences with Old Mutual, one of which is Grammy Award-winning DJ Zakes Banwtini.
The Osama hitmaker took to the platform revealing that after his mother passed away in 2007, he only received a payout of R380.

Those in the comment section seemed confused, assuming he made a typing error, a user asked if he meant R380 or R380K (short for R380 000). He clarified by saying that it was literally just R380,00.

Meanwhile in conversation with news publication The Citizen, Old Mutual responded to the recent criticism by saying: “We are committed to finding a solution, and we would like to apologise for the way we have managed the outcry on social media.”
They further added: “Our reluctance to engage and debate on X stems from the complexities of the case and our desire and duty to protect the personal information of the individuals concerned.”
