A man’s best friend. Dogs are fondly known as such because of their natural affection, care and loyalty towards their owners.
These lovely creatures can sometimes be a handful though. For those wishing to get a dog, this should not be a worry as there are numerous ways to train your dogs, one of the most important being training your pet on how to behave.
According to Masterclass, an information platform with experts in different fields, training your dog tricks “strengthens your relationship with your pet. It also teaches your dog patience and helps expend your dog’s excess energy.”
Here are some behavioural tricks that you can teach your dog:
- Sit command – as a dog mom, this was a very easy trick to teach my dog. “To teach this trick, keep your foot on your dog’s leash, allowing them only a little room to move but not enough to jump up. Hold a treat above their head so that they move into the sit position naturally, then say “Sit.” In order for your dog to understand this newly taught trick, the above-mentioned hub says it has to be repeated, and a reward every time it remembers to “sit” should be given.
- Stay command – this command will require you to start with the above step first (sit) and then blend it in together. Your dog will have to be in a standing position first before you order it to sit. when in a sitting position you may command it to stay. “Wait a few seconds. If your dog is still seated and has not moved, say their release word and reward them,” adds PetFriendlyBox, a pet care subscription box for dogs and cats.
- Come command – begin this trick by standing a few yards from your dog, adds PetFriendlyBox. “Say your dog’s name, and the command “come” or “here.” As your pet starts moving toward you, give positive reinforcement by cheering or saying, “Good dog,” adds the hub. Do not forget to give your best friend a reward and a little rub each time they get things right.
