It seems the divorce proceedings for former soccer player Matthew Booth and his estranged wife, businesswoman Sonia Booth, may not be coming to an end anytime soon.
A source close to the former couple shared with ZiMoja that Matthew’s pending banking statements which the high court requires are allegedly causing the delay.
The source adds that Sonia allegedly wants the divorce to end soon as the money put into it is reportedly eating away at their joint estate, and it should instead be invested in their son’s education.
ZiMoja further reports that the source shared that in May 2023, Sonia launched a court application to compel the father of two to submit financial statements and won with costs.
“[Matthew] appealed the court’s decision, but later decided to withdraw the appeal. Now he is stalling the process, and he risks another approach of the courts by Sonia to file a motion of contempt of court,” stated the source.
They added, “The only thing I can think of as a concerned friend is about Sonia’s well-being given how unnecessary the delays are. The divorce could’ve been finalised months ago had the legend submitted financial statements as ordered by the court. Now Sonia knows [Matthew] is hiding a lot more. Why else would he make excuses about submitting the other two-year bank statements the court ordered him to submit?”
In November 2022, Sonia accused the former Bafana Bafana footballer of having an affair with then-married trainer Bongani Mthombeni-Moller.
Sharing a series of Instagram posts detailing the affair, Sonia stated that 14 February 2022 was the beginning of the end.
“They spent the night in Polokwane and the following day he dropped her off at her house. I bet it was bliss because Matthew Booth arrived home with an exquisitely wrapped gift box, one of the perfumes being ‘Guilty’, a wicked sense of humour,” she said in one of her posts. In another, she shared the following:

The source also shared with ZiMoja that infidelity allegedly started more than a decade ago. “I was horrified when Sonia told me of many other women, especially around 2012 when he was living at their Cape Town property while he was playing for Ajax Cape Town. She stayed behind in Johannesburg because she didn’t want to uproot their eldest son in the middle of a school year.”
