Millions of South Africans will hold the future of the country in their hands as the election polls are set to open on the 29th of May.
This year is believed by many to be quite an interesting one as it officially marks 30 years of democracy under the leadership of the ruling party the African National Congress (ANC).
Despite how hopeful President Cyril Ramaphosa has been, the rest of the country appears to be disappointed by how the country has run over the last 30 years.
In his annual State of The Nation Address in February, Cyril’s story of success involving a fictional character “Tintswalo” stirred criticism from opposition leader John Steenhuisen who claimed that the president was living in an “Alice in Wonderland” fairytale while the reality of our country is facing crime, unemployment, and lack of opportunities.
At the centre of many of the stats are young people who are considered to be the future, yet face the highest level of unemployment currently at 44.3% according to Stats SA.
With many matriculants and students currently in the age group to vote, this would be an ideal time to have their voices heard.
According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), Here is why:
1. Because it is your right to vote – Unlike those who fought during the apartheid era, you have the freedom to exercise your democratic right and choose a party that best caters to your needs.
2. Democracy needs you – For democracy to work it needs to be exercised employing public participation.
3. It is an opportunity for change – IEC explains that one should not skip this opportunity, doing so could lead you being stuck on similar issues for the next five years.
4. Our generation knows best – With the constant improvement that comes with the evolution of technology social media and the internet give us access to information that our parents never had. This is critical in helping you make an informed decision.
