A man was shocked when he discovered that his child’s birth certificate was written, “Child born in wedlock.”
It seems that the Department of Home Affairs has introduced new birth certificates that stipulate whether a child is born within or out of wedlock. This status indicates if the child’s parents are either married or not.
TikTok creator Lebogang Mokubela states that upon arriving to fetch his newborn’s birth certificate he discovered what was written under endorsements, adding that, he later went to check his five-year-old’s certificate, and nothing was written under endorsements. Lebogang adds that both children are born without wedlock.
This video caused a mixed reaction on the app causing many users to go and check what their children’s birth certificates say. TikTok users also posed the question of why this was a thing at Home Affairs.
Lebogang captioned the video with, “Do now birth certificates stipulate if a child is born within a marriage or not? Hetic!”

Many users took to the comment section to reveal what was written under the endorsement name, and each response was different with most of them stipulating none, the reason for this is not yet known by people.
One user commented: “My child’s certificate is written born out of wedlock.”
Another user said, “My one says, ‘Father acknowledges paternity.”
One user mentioned that her children’s birth certificates, say ‘none’ under the endorsements yet she is married, adding, “I think it depends on who captures the information.”
