University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) alumni, Kgosatsana Sithole captured the hearts of many and she broke all sorts of stereotypes and myths about differently-abled people. She obtained a Bachelor of Social Science degree with cum laude, having no upper limbs.
Kgosatsana was born with phocomelia, a rare condition characterized by shortened or missing upper or lower limbs. She is one of 100 graduates with disabilities graduating from UKZN’s autumn graduation.
The young graduate spoke to IOL, an online news agency, explaining that she had to brave up despite her academic journey having challenges. She said, “Being the only one different in the class posed its challenges, but I had to embrace confidence in my uniqueness and remain steadfast in my purpose.”
The UKZN page on Instagram posted the video of Kgosatsana on stage to collect her certificate.

Nonkululeko Sithole, Kgosatsana’s proud mother, started crying as she saw her daughter graduate. Upon seeing the moment of triumph, she hurried to hug her. She told the publication that her daughter’s success would not have been possible without God, she also mentioned that their family has been very supportive through Kgosatsana’s journey.
Nonkululeko continued to say, “Kgosatsana accomplished the seemingly impossible by earning her degree cum laude and in record time. Despite the physical strain on her back – pursuing her studies caused – she remained persistent and focused. Our family is immensely proud of her.”
Moving forward, Kgosatsana intends to study television and film to create stories about politics and crime that are centred on Africa.
Nothing can hinder a determined mind from accomplishing greatness, not societal stereotypes, and not physical impairments.
