In 2024, one would assume that people are aware that struggle icon and former president Nelson Mandela long passed, but that is not the case, as a granny from a rural part of the Eastern Cape was shocked to hear of the news.
This cute video of the granny sitting with her granddaughter, who goes by the user name @MissMketo on the social media platform TikTok made its way to the popular platform recently, receiving a lot love from internet users.
The video which was taken just before the election sees the two conversing about who the granny was going to vote for.
The user then speaks about the late Nelson Mandela before adding, “Uyamazi uba wasweleka (Do you know that he passed on)?” asking her granny.
Shocked to hear that Madiba was no more, the granny responded saying, “Hayi mandiyovela (No, I must go show my support).”
Visiting the family of the deceased is a norm in the rural Eastern Cape and other African cultures, as people extend support to the family by showing face, before and after the burial.
Amused by her granny’s response, @MissMketo asked where exactly does her granny want to go, to which she responded saying she wants to go to Mandela’s home to give them support. She then asked to be accompanied to Madiba’s home, as she did not hear of his passing.
Confused a bit, the user asked if her granny was aware who Madiba is and she confirmed that she does.
Sad to hear of the news, the isiXhosa-speaking granny asked, “Where is his home?” to which the user responded, saying he is from Qunu, near Mtata.
The grandmother then remembered a day when she heard that there were cars going to Mandela’s funeral, asking the user if that was in reference to Nelson Mandela’s funeral.
When @MissMketo confirmed, granny said she wished she had also gone with those who were attending the funeral before asking, “Was Mandela sick?”
After the TikTok user confirmed that the former president was indeed sick, the granny added, “We will then vote for his wife, does he not have a wife”?
This, the granny said while wearing an ANC t-shirt with President Cyril Ramaphosa on it.
Her amused granddaughter told her that the person on the t-shirt was now the one in charge of the party.
Unaware of who Cyril was, she asked, “Who is he?” before confirming that she knew who former president Jacob Zuma was. When asked about former president Thabo Mbeki, the grandmother had no clue who he was.
