The legendary Maskandi singer, Zibokwakhe Mnyandu popularly known as Phuzekhemisi has been revealed to be among the judging panel of SABC’s new reality show, Ushuni Womhlaba set to debut on the 7th of July on SABC 1.
The Imbizo hitmaker will identify the new talent alongside rapper Big Zulu, Sho Madjozi and Msaki; with Mpumi Mlambo and Mandla ‘Njinji’ Magwaza as hosts.
Speaking to the entertainment publication, TshisaLIVE, Phuzekhemisi said he is grateful for the opportunity.
“SABC thinks for us as artists, like I’ve been on stage on Ezodumo and Roots over the years, the channel has been supportive to us traditional musicians. I’m happy they have decided to approach me. Now it’s up to the contestants to show their talent through this show,” he said.
According to a press release on X (previously known as Twitter), a total of 40 contestants will be selected through a combination of regional and online auditions, ensuring that aspiring Maskandi and Mbhaqanga artists from every corner of the country have the opportunity to participate.
These auditions will open up the competition to a wide array of talent, highlighting the diverse musical landscape of South Africa. The competition will go on for 16 weeks, with each episode bringing viewers closer to discovering the next big star in Maskandi and Mbhaqanga music. The journey will end in October 2024.
The region audition dates are as follows:
First stop will be at Kwa Mai Mai in Gauteng, June 22-23, The Playhouse Company in Durban, June 29-30, Emalahleni Civic Theatre, July 6-7 and lastly in Lusikisiki Health Resource Centre, 13-14 July.
