South African legendary jazz artist Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse has voiced a compelling plea directed at the future Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture.
Emphasising the importance of visibility and advocacy within the industry, Sipho Hotstix has urged the appointed minister to prioritise the interests of the arts and culture sectors.
Speaking with TshisaLIVE, Hotstix highlighted the uneven relationship between ministers and artists.
“There has been a checkered relationship between ministers and artists. Some ministers come into the portfolio and easily relate to it, but for others, it’s just lip service. It’s sad to see a minister not knowing what he is doing — such as our past minister. One couldn’t understand what his position was.”
He stated the importance of artists being visible both within and beyond their industry to enhance their livelihoods. He believes that success should not lead to detachment from the community, urging artists to prioritise unity, especially among the younger generation.
In addition, Zizi Kodwa announced his resignation as Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture and as a Member of the Cabinet. This decision coincided with his denial of charges against him.
According to The Citizen, the former minister Zizi and his co-accused, former EOH Holdings senior executive Jehan Mackay, plan to plead not guilty during their trial and were released on R30 000 bail. The case has been postponed to 23 July 2024.
Allegations suggest that Kodwa received cash and gifts amounting to over R1.6 million from IT group EOH in exchange for contracts between 2015 and 2016.
