The news that Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena and the team have parted ways surfaced leaving many supporters in shock and concerned about the team’s future.
Rhulani took over as the team’s head coach on 24th October 2022 during the 2022-23 season.
Prior to that he served in the under 15 as an assistant coach, the under 19 as the head coach, he had also been the academy secretary, a caretaker coach for players that were going on loan, a co-coach and then the head coach.
Visiting the Robert Marawa show on 947, Rhulani shared that the decision to leave was not his adding that he was forced to leave.
“It was decided to mutually separate, I didn’t want to leave, I have to make that clear I think my head was forced,” said the multi-league winning coach.
Apologising to Robert for his inability to give full details of his termination he added, “There’s a lot of things I can’t talk about, I’ve signed a confidentiality clause that prohibits me from speaking about some of the details and things … because if I do I’ll get into a lot of trouble.”

Also counting his achievements and reflecting on his relationship with the Mamelodi Sundowns players.

Mamelodi Sundowns had earlier sent out a statement on Rhulani’s exit which partly read:
“Sundowns wishes to express its gratitude to Rhulani Mokwena for his contribution to the successes and achievements of the club during his tenure as Head Coach. Rhulani Mokwena will forever be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family and the club wishes him all of the very best with his future endeavours.”
Deterring people from the idea that the exit was personal the team added, “The decision of Mamelodi Sundowns was taken by the Board taking into account the objectives and expectations of the club and was not influenced or based on the recommendation of any individual associated with the club.”
