Multi-talented, DJ, producer, and Lawyer, Zandile Mazithulela, popularly known as DJ Zandimaz, revealed that she will be taking a step back from music as she recovers from a brain tumour removal.
According to the music and culture magazine, The Yanos, the Zimbabwean-born amapiano hitmaker had her big break on a youth DJ talent program at Cubana featuring the newest DJs in 2013. Zandile rose to fame after she was permanently hired as the DJ of the Cubana club from 2013 to 2014. She then released Emathandweni, a single with Nokwazi in 2020 which became a hit.
Speaking to TshisaLive, DJ Zandimaz shared that she underwent surgery in early March, following two seizures in 2022 – one on her UK tour and the other a few weeks later in Zambia.
“We thought it was just fatigue and that’s when I went to see my doctor and they discovered I have a tumour. For a year I took a break, and then things got worse as I had anxiety and it was triggering my nervous system. I was going through different types of emotions. I couldn’t walk properly,” she added.
“Hence, I took this long break because I couldn’t perform as I can’t stand for long and couldn’t wear heels. My confidence went down, it frustrated me. A lot of people were not aware that I was going through hectic stuff,” she shared.
The Zimbabwe NAMA Awards nominee explained that her tumour made it impossible for her to write and perform songs, which caused her to be depressed and that her support system has been excellent. Throughout this challenging time, her husband has been her rock. She is at home recuperating, the publication further added.
