Many will remember Bongani Mthombeni as the third wheel in Matthew and Sonia Booth’s cheesecake saga from a few years ago.
Bongani was vilified as a homewrecker when Sonia documented the story of how her Tupperware went missing and she found out about her then-husband’s alleged affair. Her recounting of the events that followed became known as “cheesecake-gate.”
Allegations soon started flying and Booth’s personal life was aired in public, much to the displeasure of the former Bafana player.
Things appeared to die down as Sonia went off to make lemonade from lemons and launched her sweet treat brand. The former couple divorced last year.
Bongani has now appeared on the Engineer Your Life With Lungelo KM podcast, and the episode went viral almost immediately on social media. @ThisIsColbert picked up snippets of the interview and shared it on X (formerly Twitter).
Bongani Mthombeni-Moller speaks for the very first time about her relationship with Matthew Booth:😟
“I was insulted & ridiculed by people who don’t even know me, I was dragged by individuals that believed a single narrative”🥹

“It was difficult to find myself in the centre of a public scandal,” said Bongani, who added that there were many mistruths. The businesswoman explained she couldn’t respond to the narrative that was put out there. “I felt muzzled a little bit,” she said.
The company director revealed that she endured lots of abuse and was insulted by strangers. “My side of the story was never shared. Matthew’s side of the story was never shared,” Mthombeni reminded viewers.
“It is in those trying times where you have to be truthful and you have to do the right thing, and it isn’t easy by any means. But it is through that kind of adversity where you realise God has a big purpose for you,” she said.
@ThisIsColbert posted the full interview a few hours later, but any chances of Mthombeni redeeming herself were lost on the X crowd.

An X user went straight for the jugular and commented: “Imagine putting God right in the middle of your infidelity. Yohh no shame at all.”
Another brought up the cheesecake dilemma and said: “Aowa but people didn’t even know you… people were commenting on Sonia Booth and the cake she never ate… because you had the cake and ate it.
“The issue was the cake in the Booth’s marriage.”
“Zero accountability…’She is the victim’… I wonder who forced this married woman to cheat with another married man…I wonder,” pointed out @orchidsntulips.
