It is a given that kids bring you so much joy, that having many pictures of them is a must, not only because of their overload cuteness but also a memory to be cherished.
However, this becomes a concern when we share these images on social media, the publications below share the reasons why the concept of sharenting has a negative impact on your child.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, “sharenting” is a blended term of two words, sharing and parenting and it describes the practice of overly sharing information, images, stories, or updates about your child’s life on the internet. Although sharenting typically occurs with the best of intentions, it has its dangers.
Dr. Elizabeth Meade, Chief of Pediatrics at Swedish Hospital says, “We all know the web can be a dangerous place for your kids. What you might not realize is that there’s growing concern parents are contributing to that dangerous space.”
“And don’t forget that your pictures can be stolen at any time. They can be downloaded and reshared on predator sites. This is what doctors call being digitally kidnapped,” she added.
Susan Albers, a psychologist provides one with the perfect example that makes absolute sense, she says, “Let’s say you take a picture of your kid posing in front of their new school. Now, suddenly, everybody with access to that image knows where they go to school and how to find them.”
The above psychologist also adds that “sharenting” gives predators immediate access to your child’s life, allowing them to exploit it.
