The renowned South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) are one of the many ways the local industry is appreciated for its work. The event’s organisers have announced their nominations for the 18th edition of the coveted awards ceremony, and things are interesting, to say the least.
This comes after the announcement of the nominees was delayed by the NFVF, who have also announced the addition of five new categories which are namely; best achievement in visual effects, special effects in hair and makeup, and best original songs for a telenovela, TV drama, or feature film.
Taking to their social media, the SAFTAs revealed to their followers that their list of this year’s nominees was ready. “The wait is over, the SAFTAs 18 nominations list is out! Congratulations to all the nominees. Check out the full list of nominees on the bio,” their caption reads.

Thembinkosi Mthembu has been a name on our lips quite often this past year and now is no different, as the ‘Shaka Ilembe’ star has made history by being the first actor to bag four nominations for different roles from four different productions. He scored nominations for best actor in a drama for his role as Dingiswayo on ‘Shaka Ilembe’, as well as his role as Bonga on ‘Adulting’. He is also nominated for best actor in a telenovela for his role as Bandile on ‘Outlawz’ and lastly, he is nominated for best supporting actor in a telenovela for his role as Mabutho on Mzansi Magic’s ‘The River’.
This is an illustrious achievement for the Durban native and is a testament to the hard work he has put in to be acknowledged by the industry and the consumers of the work.
Veteran actress Sindi Dlathu has also made history, once again as she is the only actress to get nominated for the same role for every season of the show, for her role as Lindiwe on ‘The River’.
