Blood clots can be harmful and can result in major health problems like heart attacks or strokes if they are not treated. Catching these symptoms early is important to avoid consequences.
Some symptoms can act as crucial warning indicators, even though they aren’t always obvious.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, “A blood clot is blood that has partially solidified in a blood vessel. Blood vessels are your body’s highway system.”
With that said, the above clinic also states that vessels come in three different types, namely, arteries, which remove blood from the heart, blood is returned to the heart through veins, and capillaries connect our arteries and veins.
Venous blood clots are the most common type of blood clots, although they can form anywhere in the 60,000 miles of blood capillaries in your body, according to the health institute mentioned above.
According to the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the following are some factors that raise a person’s risk of blood clots:
- Pregnancy
- Smoking
- Individuals who are over the age of 60
- Immobility during extended hospital stays
The Medical News Today health information publication claims, the following are common treatments for blood clots:
- Blood thinners are anticoagulant drugs that assist in limiting the growth of existing clots and prevent the formation of new ones.
- Thrombolytic treatment to break up clots.
- Compression socks.
The health-focused publication Healthline claims, “A blood clot may feel differently depending on where it affects you. For example, a blood clot deep in the leg may cause throbbing, swelling, and cramping in the affected area. A blood clot in your abdomen may cause abdominal pain, nausea, and bloody stools.”
If you have symptoms such as throbbing, cramping, or swelling in one area of your body, or if you suspect you may have a blood clot, you should consult a medical expert, the health hub further adds.
