Springbok physiotherapist Rene Naylor has built herself quite a reputation for her ability to get some of our biggest rugby men up and running again, however, a recent video suggests that her expertise might come in handy in nature’s wildlife too.
Known for being one of the longest-standing members of the Springbok staff, Rene recently astonished hundreds of people on social media when she exchanged the tight five in the bok scrum to lend a helping hand to one of the members of our country’s big five, a rhino.
Taking to Instagram, she recently uploaded a video revealing how she, with the assistance of trained animal experts and a vet was able to help a baby rhino out of its misery after it has injured its foot at just two days old.
Sharing the experience with her followers, she captioned her post:
“Tight five or big five, physio can make a difference.”
“Baby rhino, Andy, injured his foot when only two days old. The would has made him limp and not take full weight of his foot. As a result, muscle wasting shortening. So, while the vet, Chris Smith did his wound dressing I managed to do some physio.”
Moreover, she explained: “Rehab for a rhino as for an athlete involves: pain management, regaining mobility and strength, nutrition and most importantly knowing someone cares. Well done to the Care for the Wild team.”
The video attached to the post shows the team capturing the little rhino in his habitat while each of the team members starts working to rehabilitate the little rhino. Later he is released back into the wild where he is reunited with his mother.
