In or out: Coffee vs matcha

Being a 9-5 girl, energy is something you find yourself constantly needing due to the long office days sometimes filled with no breaks.

Even energy drinks advise against drinking them regularly can unfortunately cause long-term illness and sometimes even death.

Health and fitness gurus will influence many of their followers to go the coffee or matcha way without realising that too much of something can be detrimental to your health.

Celebrity trainer, Luke Worthington says, “There are several studies (most recently in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2021) that show a caffeine dose of approximately 5mg per kg of body weight produces a significant increase in both physical and mental performance.”

According to Healthline, coffee is more common and popular in most households while matcha is known to be a green Japanese powder for those feeling more boujee, adding that, you can add milk, sugar or cream to any of your chosen beverages.

As per reports by Health, both coffee and matcha have their benefits, such as reducing inflammation and lowering glucose levels. One key difference is their caffeine content, with matcha being less acidic than coffee due to coffee’s pH range of 4.85–5.13, compared to matcha’s pH of about 5.58–5.94.

Speaking to Vogue about whether you should consume coffee or matcha, Nutritionist Lucy Miller said, “Benefits include reduced risk of Alzheimer’s, depression, type 2 diabetes and liver disease,” adding, “Coffee is one of the highest sources of antioxidants in some diets and can help protect against the free radicals that can damage our DNA.”

She also noted that although they fight fatigue there are harmful side effects which can trigger the release of adrenaline in your body later causing you to feel anxious when you don’t need to be.
