It can be frustrating to deal with annoying flakes on your face. Facial dandruff is a common problem that can make your skin feel uncomfortable and irritated.
It is important to understand that facial dandruff is not the same as dry skin. Everything you need to know about face dandruff and how to maintain healthy, radiant skin is explained by the below experts.
According to the health-focused publication Healthline, “Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as dandruff, is a common flaky, itchy skin condition that affects people of all ages.”
The health publication also states that although it usually appears on your scalp, it can also appear on other parts of your body, such as your face and ears.
Typically, seborrheic dermatitis appears thicker and yellow. Picking or scratching at it can make it appear crusty and turn red, the above-mentioned health hub further adds.
Dry Skin Wellness claims, “Dandruff is primarily caused by an overproduction of oil and dead skin cells on the scalp. This is often due to a fungus called Malassezia, which is naturally present on the skin but can overgrow and cause irritation.”
It can also be brought on by stress, hormone fluctuations, or a compromised immune system, according to the above website.
The Cleveland Clinic states that topical antifungals, corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors are among the treatments for seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body.
“Topical antifungals include ciclopirox, ketoconazole or sertaconazole. These products, available in creams, foams or gels, are usually applied to the affected areas twice daily for up to eight weeks and then as needed,” the above clinic further explains.
