Babies may not come with instruction manuals, but they do come with their unique language, and knowing when they’re ready for a nap is a big part of understanding it.
If you’ve ever wondered how to decode your little one’s signals before they reach full-blown crankiness, this guide is for you.
With the help of health experts, let’s explore the tiny tells that signal it’s time to rest, and how recognising them can make life easier for both you and your baby
According to the Raising Children publication, newborns can quickly become tired, with signs such as pulling at ears, closing fists, yawning, fluttering eyelids, and jerky movements.
Babies and toddlers are said to experience fatigue after 1-3 hours of awakening, with toddlers experiencing tired signs like clumsiness, clinginess, and increased activity. The publication further explains that tired signs may include difficulty focusing, jerky arm and leg movements, and a desire for attention.
Other signs mentioned by the Cleveland Clinic include fussiness, irritability, disinterest in their environment, whining or crying, and sweating due to increased cortisol levels.
“When they’re too tired, they experience a rush of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline that can amp them up instead of calming them down. To keep your baby from becoming overtired put them down for a nap as soon as you notice signs of drowsiness, like eye rubbing and droopy eyelids.”
Swaddling is a recommended method for babies to sleep, as it prevents involuntary jerks and reminds them of a safe womb, claims Healthline.
Other methods are said to include touch, pacifiers, movement, sound, and darkening the room to reduce stimulation.
