Just as we thought the Springboks could not achieve any more accomplishments this year, scrum specialist Ox Nche continues to shine as he has been dubbed the Sports Industry Awards ‘Sports Personality of the Year’.
Any South African and rugby fan with eyes and ears knows that 2024 was the year of the Springboks This comes as coach Rassie Erasmus’s 52-man squad went from underdogs to replacing the Australians and All Blacks as the team to beat. Among these men lies Retshegofaditswe ‘Ox’ Nche, a man of few words who can make his presence felt through his actions.
For his efforts in the green and gold Springboks jersey as well as the black and white Sharks jersey, Ox was recognised as the ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ at this year’s edition of the South African Sports Industry Awards (SASIA). The SASIA is a prestigious ceremony held to shine a light on any impressive and outstanding sporting campaigns displayed by our talented athletes.
Unsurprisingly, the ceremony turned out to be the Springboks show as they swept up a handful of Awards, including a nod for the nostalgic Chasing the Sun 2 documentary that took mzansi by storm. However, Ox’s recognition as the sports personality of the year is the topic on South Africa’s minds as the scrum specialist is often over shined by the likes of his superstar teammates Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth, as was seen when he was left out of of the ‘Player of the Year’ conversation despite pulling of one of the most dominant performances at the loosehead prop position.

Proving that he is not a man of many words, Ox took to his X (formerly Twitter) to respond with a simple “Danko” to acknowledge and appreciate the congratulatory message.
