Imagine walking across an entire continent, not for work or necessity, but simply for the thrill of it and to inspire others along the way.
This is exactly what Japanese adventurer Gump Suzuki has done. Over the past six months, Suzuki has been trekking through Africa with one goal in mind: to reach Cape Town in South Africa, all while pushing a rickshaw.
The 34-year-old tour guide from Tokyo has already traversed multiple continents, including Asia, Europe, Australia and North America, and now he’s completing his journey across Africa. Suzuki started his remarkable trip in Kenya in June 2024 and has since travelled through Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. His journey has captured the attention of over 500,000 followers on TikTok, where he shares updates and reflections from the road.
“I wanted to travel five continents with my rickshaw,” Gump said. “Cape Town felt like the perfect destination, not only for the incredible adventure but to spread a message of hope and positivity to everyone I meet along the way.”
Gump’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. He recounted a particularly difficult moment when he was involved in an accident with a truck in Zambia, which left his rickshaw damaged. Despite this setback, he remained resilient, making repairs at a local bike shop. “The truck was fine, and I’m fine too. I’m still alive!’ he said with a smile.
The highlights of his African adventure have included unforgettable experiences, such as witnessing wildlife in the wild. While in Botswana, Gump encountered a lion on the road. “I was terrified, so I went back to the nearest village and set up my tent there instead,” he laughed.
Along the way, Gump has been deeply moved by the kindness and hospitality of the locals. Many South Africans have welcomed him into their homes or helped with accommodations, showing their generosity as he travels across the country. “The people here have warmed my heart. It’s incredible to meet so many kind souls,” Gump said.
In a recent stop on his journey, Suzuki reached the West Coast of South Africa, where he took a well-deserved break at Spar Tops in Langebaan to stock up for the road. On his wish list? Beer.
Without hesitation, he walked straight to the store’s selection and grabbed a bottle of Darling Brew Pixie Dust, a fine local brew that perfectly suited his adventurous spirit.
His journey isn’t just about adventure. Gump has also used his platform to raise awareness about poverty, reaching out to his followers to donate food and school supplies for those in need along his route. “I met many people who are struggling. They don’t have enough money for food, and I wanted to help,” he explained.
Now, with his arrival in Cape Town on the horizon, Gump is preparing to wrap up this monumental chapter of his travels. He’ll be in the city for five days before heading back to Japan on 31 January. But don’t expect him to stop there – his next big project is already in the works.
“My next adventure is to cross South America with my rickshaw. It’s all about fun and discovery. Life is short, so we must enjoy it and keep learning,” Gump said, ready to take on the next leg of his extraordinary journey.
