Lynn Forbes, mother to one of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians Kiernan Forbes has found herself reminiscing about her time spent in the labour ward after giving birth to the rapper the world now knows as AKA.
This past Tuesday would have seen him celebrate his 37th birthday – instead, it marked only the year his family and extended loved ones had to honour the day in his absence.
This comes after he and close friend Tabello “Tibz” Motsoane were murdered in February 2023 while eating out at the Wish restaurant in Durban’s popular street, Florida Road.
At the time of his passing, he was survived by his daughter Kairo, younger brother Stephen, and parents Tony and Lynn Forbes.
Taking to Instagram, Lynn, who was not only his mother but also his biggest supporter reflected on the first few minutes spent with her firstborn moments after giving birth to him.
“On this day, at 1:15 in the early morning, I heard your first cry, I felt your warmth as you were placed on my chest. Your natural birth, 37 years ago, left me exhausted yet invigorated.”
“I couldn’t take my eyes off you. Counting every tiny toe, every little finger,” she added.
In her reflection, she noted that that moment had changed her life dramatically since he had made her a mother, and the two had developed a bond from the very beginning.
“So perfect, so full of promise, you left me in awe. I can never say ‘Happy heavenly birthday.’”
“For your birthday is an occasion forever etched in my heart. Happy birthday, Kiernan,”, she concluded.
Earlier this month, she and her granddaughter Kairo took a trip to Istanbul, where they participated in several activities that the “Don’t forget to Pray” rapper enjoyed.

At the time she added: “On this trip, it literally feels as if we are walking in his footsteps, with him leading the way wherever we go.”
