“Ladies and gentlemen. I designed my first dress,” Somizi Mhlongo announced proudly, sharing a video of his daughter Bahumi looking radiant in a plum-coloured evening gown adorned with gold chains and crystals.
In another clip, simply captioned “Client: Daughter,” he revealed the original sketch that brought the design to life.

Somizi has never been one to stick to a single lane. From choreographer to TV presenter to best-selling cookbook author, he’s built a career on reinvention.
In 2023, he made another bold move, launching Sompire Kids, a fashion brand that quickly gained traction in South Africa. He took things further this year, making a splash at New York Fashion Week.
One of the biggest events in the industry, NYFW happens twice a year, in February and September, giving designers a platform to showcase their collections to buyers, media, and the global fashion scene.

Determined to refine his skills, Somizi enrolled at the prestigious Villioti Fashion Institute last year to formally study fashion design.
In an interview with the Sunday Times earlier this year, he reflected on his decision, saying he was fortunate to have the wisdom to recognise when to learn something new rather than assuming everything could be self-taught, adding that fashion was one of those things.
He also expressed excitement about stepping into high-end fashion, emphasising his passion for creativity and eagerness to make his mark in the industry.
With his latest creation gaining praise, it’s clear that Somizi is not just dabbling in design, he’s serious about mastering the craft.
