In a recent episode of “Podcast and Chill with MacG,” hosts MacG and Sol Phenduka found themselves navigating the complexities of non-binary identities during an interview with Khabane Moloi, a podcaster and stand-up comedian amongst. Khabane is also known for co-hosting a podcast with her sister, Pabi Moloi.
On a recent episode with MacG and Sol, Khabane shared insights about his partner’s gender identity. He explained that his partner identifies as non-binary and prefers they/them pronouns, prompting a candid discussion about understanding and respecting such identities.
The conversation started when MacG asked Khabane if he got anything for Valentine’s Day, to which Khabane replied by saying he received a song from his partner. He then started referring to his partner as “they/them”, and that’s where MacG and Sol got confused
Khabane encouraged viewers to check out the song on Spotify by Larry Martin, and when he used the pronoun “They”, Sol assumed he was talking about a band, to which he asked, “Oh, they are a band that is non-binary?”
“They’re an individual who is non-binary,” explained Khabane, and Sol replied with an “Oh she’s them?” and they all laughed. Khabane then again corrected Sol, saying, “They are them.”
Throughout the conversation, MacG and Sol grappled with the concept, occasionally defaulting to gendered pronouns like “she” when referring to the guest’s partner. Each time, they quickly corrected themselves, demonstrating an effort to adapt to the correct pronoun usage. Their genuine curiosity led to questions about how non-binary identities function within relationships and society.
The episode sparked discussions among listeners about the importance of educating oneself on gender diversity and the significance of using correct pronouns. While MacG and Sol’s initial confusion mirrored that of many unfamiliar with non-binary identities, their willingness to engage in the conversation and make corrections in real-time was noted by audiences as a step toward greater understanding.
This exchange underscored the evolving nature of conversations around gender and the necessity for open dialogue in fostering inclusivity and respect.
