We have grown to love him as one of South Africa’s leading presenters, but now Phila Mazibuko’s acting star is rising on Soul City. Boitumelo Mmakou got to sit with him on set to find out more about the cutie.
You play AB. Are you any different from him?
AB, also known as Abednigo, comes from a background of poverty. From an early age, he had to take care of his family and after the death of his father. I relate to the character because we both love our families.
How different is acting from presenting?
Very different! As a presenter I am myself; you get to see Phila, and I am a lot faster in talking and have lots of the energy. Acting is different because you are playing someone else and have to remove yourself from the character.
Is acting more challenging than presenting?
Yes, it is. I have had to learn to slow down so as to be clear when talking.
Soul City is an educational television drama. What do you hope the viewers learn from your character?
They must know that no matter where you come from, you can make it. Just follow your heart and you will make it.
What do you do in your spare time?
I love being at home and spending time with my family.
What is next for Phila Mazibuko?
Right now, I can’t say much. But people should be on the lookout.
Any advice for upcoming actors and presenters?
Follow your heart and don’t let anything get to you. Focus on the price and the goal.
