The countdown to the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) has officially begun. We chat to the Queen of Everything, Bonang Matheba, about her nomination for the Personality of the Year category.
Congrats on your nomination. How do you feel?
I fell over when I heard about the nomination! It really is incredible and a privilege to be nominated as the personality of the year. I am super stoked yet humbled to be recognised on such a huge platform.
You are nominated alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment; did this nomination come as a surprise?
I really wasn’t ready for all of this. I didn’t see it coming at all. I am humbled and would like to thank MTV and everyone who saw and still see my worth.
What does this nomination mean to you?
It definitely means that what I do is recognised and appreciated; not only in South Africa but the whole of Africa and even beyond that. To be nominated alongside the likes of international soccer star Yaya Toure and top SA comedian Trevor Noah surely is something big.
If you win, what will it mean for your career?
It means more recognition from Africa, more love and venturing into new heights.
Let’s talk fashion. Have you picked what you’ll be wearing at the awards?
Of course I have! I don’t like to leave things to the last minute. Since the nominations, my designer has been working on my gorgeous dress that I will be wearing at the awards. I can’t wait to wear it!
Can you give us a hint of what your outfit will look like?
I am girl full of surprises (laughs). Unfortunately, I cannot tell or even give a hint. But I promise you, my outfit is going to be all sorts of gorgeous!
What advice would you give to ladies who’ll be attending when it comes to fashion and beauty?
I always say, stick to what works for you. It can be a statement or simple outfit, but if it works for you and you are happy, than you have won. Try not to overdo your make-up; it really can be a turn-off.
What is the biggest and primary driver of your career?
My passion drives me. I am totally in love with my craft; I sleep, walk and eat what I do. That is why it is so easy to do and excel in my career. Hard work and passion result in success and happiness.
