We couldn’t think of a better way to start our week than to speak with one of the hottest guys in the entertainment industry right now, Lehasa Moloi.
Lehasa is a small-town boy with big-town dreams. I was born in Welkom, Free State.
I ended my formal studies in 2008 and then started working my butt off knocking on doors and casting for any and everything I could find. My first big role was a short one on Muvhango in 2010.
Growing up, I’ve always wanted to be different things like a lawyer, doctor, athlete or a policeman. I did every school play when I was in high school and soon realised through acting I could be or do all of these things.
Rockville came as a blessing for me. I was called out of the blue by the Fergusons who had seen my work, thanks to a suggestion from head writer Phathu Makwarela. I came in, auditioned and a week or so later, I had the part.
My role as Oupa on Rockville has been such fun. Working with legends and professionals like the Fergusons, Owen Sejake, Luthuli Dhlamini and Mbali Mlotshwa have allowed me to perfect my craft.
There is a special lady in my life. We met at a casting for a commercial and she’s creative, intelligent and principled; she challenges me and makes me laugh. From the moment I saw her, I thought she’s drop-dead gorgeous and I had to get to know her.
I take criticism with a pinch of salt. Criticism is only given because the giver cares, so when I hear something negative, I look at it as if that person were caring for me. Disappointment is part and parcel of the biz, you just have to remember that your skills are not based on one opportunity and that God’s time may not be your time but He is never late.
My love for music started in high school and I’ve been singing in choirs, rapping and producing music with my friends. I stepped away from the music-making side of me because my rap and production partner passed away and I couldn’t see myself making music without him. I continued to work on my skills and I feel that God has now given me the opportunity to pursue that side of me.
My biggest achievement has been working consistently for the past five years. I’ve been blessed and I really am humbled by the small victories along the way.
I am currently working on a number of projects that I am pitching through my production company, 2 theater shows. One of them being a Shakespeare piece and my music venture, which is a Hip Hop project. Expect to see me in Hollywood in the near future. My team and I are in the initial phases of this move and exciting things are coming up.
