Jazzed Up with Tumi Mogorosi

by Fundiswa Nkwanyana

We chat to Tumi Mogorosi the winner of the Mail and Guardian Jazz Album of the year award about his latest music offering.

By: Fundiswa Nkwanyana

1.I am a jazz practitioner that embraces the process of creating music. Music is the transformation and generation of ideas to create an abstract piece of art.  It has curves and contours that feed the soul. It is amazing when the melody, chord structure and rhythm come together in a moment that lives forever.

2. Creating music for a living was never part of my plan. Yet now I cannot imagine my life without it.  Learning to play musical instrumentals was something I did to pass time; I never thought I would be an awarding winning professional musician that creates albums.

3. I worked with Gabi Motuba in the creation of an album titled Sanctum Sanctorium.

This is a dual album that we co-composed together. Sanctum Sanctorium is about the holy and sacred ground where music and art flows. It also refers to our own personal space where we are allowed to create freely and honestly. It was an honour to record the album in Bern, Switzerland with the world-renowned Swiss jazz pianist Malcolm Braff and a German born bass player Sebastian Schuster together with other legendary jazz masters.

4. The collaborations forced us to re-imagine African traditional music. Our love for music brought us together and we had to relook at music and let go of the preconceived idea of was music is.

5. People will enjoy the album because we poured our hearts into it. We all worked so well together and it is evident in the album. The album will take the listener on a memorable journey.

You can catch the duo on the following dates:

Friday 18th November 2016 – Music Room, 8th Floor, WITS University, Johannesburg.

Saturday 19th November 2016 – The Chairman, Durban.
